Marie’s journey began in 2015 when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 invasive breast cancer. A young mother of two, she faced the fear behind those devastating words: “You have cancer.” Even more shocking was that her mammogram had come back completely clear just months earlier. Cancer, she quickly learned, moves fast—and doesn’t discriminate.

Though surrounded by love, Marie felt emotionally isolated. She discovered what many don’t say aloud: medicine can heal the body, but not the soul. Cancer affects far more than health—it touches joy, time, identity, and connection.

During her treatment, Marie began to understand the true meaning of community. Her village expanded—neighbors, teachers, nurses, and local businesses stepped in with kindness and care.

“I realized not everyone has the kind of community that showed up for me,” she recalls. “I wanted to be that support for someone else.”

That vision became One Tough Cookie in 2019. Its mission: to create moments of joy where cancer isn’t the loudest thing in the room. From curated care packages and uplifting events to a virtual Pick-Me-Up Corner, the organization provides emotional support to patients, survivors, and caregivers—the often-unseen warriors.

One of the organization’s most beloved initiatives is Bright Lips, Bold Earrings, where bold earrings and vibrant lip colors are gifted to women undergoing treatment. It’s a small yet powerful reminder of beauty, strength, and self-worth. “It’s not just about appearance,” Marie explains. “It’s about reclaiming identity and joy during a difficult time.”
