Family Centers Hosts World AIDS Day Luncheon Honoring Community Leader Debra Katz

Yesterday, Family Centers hosted its annual World AIDS Day Luncheon at The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien, CT, bringing together community partners, supporters, and program staff for an afternoon of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in Lower Fairfield County.
This year’s luncheon carried a profound sense of purpose as Family Centers honored Debra Katz with the 2025 AIDS Warrior Award. Katz was recognized for her decades of leadership, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to the HIV/AIDS community. Her long-standing commitment has touched countless lives and continues to shape a future grounded in equity and compassion.
The AIDS Warrior Award is named in memory of Shawn M. Lang, one of Connecticut’s earliest and most influential HIV/AIDS advocates, who passed away in 2021. Lang was a powerful champion for justice and a relentless voice for those too often unheard. The award ensures that her legacy of courage, compassion, and tireless service lives on.
The luncheon provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the impact of HIV/AIDS, celebrate the advocates who have propelled the movement forward, and reaffirm the community’s collective dedication to expanding care, education, and support for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
Events like this continue to serve as meaningful reminders of both the progress made and the work still ahead—and of the extraordinary individuals who remain committed to making a difference.
Debra Katz2025 AIDS Warrior
Debra Katz, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, was the first AIDS Program Coordinator for the City of Stamford, an early predecessor to what would become Stamford CARES and now is Family Centers CARES. She led the creation of Stamford CARES as a nonprofit and served on the original Board of Directors, offering emergency financial assistance and eventually case management.
She went on to serve 25 years overseeing prevention services for the City of Stamford, providing innovative programming and introducing initiatives that changed the course of the virus locally. A strong proponent of collaboration, she continues to partner with other organizations that share similar values and goals.
For all this and more, we are proud to name Deb Katz as the recipient of the 2025 Shawn M. Lang AIDS Warrior Award.
About the Shawn M. Lang AIDS Warrior Award
Shawn M. Lang was one of the first AIDS Warriors in the state. She spent her entire career as a local, statewide, and national advocate for persons living with HIV and AIDS, the LGBTQ+ community, as well as those with opioid addictions, survivors of domestic violence, and those experiencing housing insecurity. Shawn died unexpectedly in 2021 at the age of 65.
“I guess the phrase that comes to mind is passionate warrior,” said John Merz, CEO of Advancing Connecticut Together (ACT). “Just a real warrior for justice and for the underdog.”

Ayer, Family Centers llevó a cabo su almuerzo anual del Día Mundial del SIDA en The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s en Darien, CT, reuniendo a socios comunitarios, colaboradores y personal del programa para una tarde de reflexión, reconocimiento y renovación del compromiso con las personas afectadas por el VIH/SIDA en el condado de Lower Fairfield.
El almuerzo de este año tuvo un profundo sentido de propósito, ya que Family Centers honró a Debra Katz con el Premio AIDS Warrior 2025. Katz fue reconocida por sus décadas de liderazgo, defensa y dedicación inquebrantable a la comunidad del VIH/SIDA. Su compromiso de larga data ha tocado innumerables vidas y continúa moldeando un futuro basado en la equidad y la compasión.
El premio AIDS Warrior lleva el nombre de Shawn M. Lang, una de las primeras y más influyentes defensoras del VIH/SIDA en Connecticut, quien falleció en 2021. Debra Katz, trabajadora social clínica licenciada, fue la primera Coordinadora del Programa de SIDA de la Ciudad de Stamford, un antecedente temprano de lo que se convertiría en Stamford CARES y que ahora es Family Centers CARES. Sobre el Premio Shawn M. Lang AIDS Warrior
Shawn M. Lang fue una de las primeras “AIDS Warriors” del estado. Dedicó toda su carrera a ser una defensora a nivel local, estatal y nacional de las personas que viven con VIH y SIDA, la comunidad LGBTQ+, así como de quienes luchan con adicciones a los opioides, sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica y personas que enfrentan inseguridad de vivienda. Shawn falleció inesperadamente en 2021 a los 65 años.
