United in Purpose: Isabel Almeida and the Power of Community

There is a quiet conviction in Isabel Almeida’s leadership, a purpose rooted not in hierarchy but in heart. As President and CEO of United Way Coastal and Western Connecticut, she has built a bridge between compassion and strategy. Under her guidance, one of the region’s most trusted nonprofits is entering a new era of impact.

Born in Danbury, CT, to Portuguese immigrant parents, Isabel grew up understanding both the promise and the challenge of the American dream. Her story, one rooted in bilingual traditions, hard work, and community, mirrors the lives of many families she now serves.

“I know what it means to grow up between worlds,” she said. “It’s why I believe so deeply in creating equitable pathways for everyone.”

In 2023, Isabel led the historic merger of United Way of Western Connecticut and United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, creating a stronger, united organization serving 27 towns across Fairfield and Litchfield Counties, including Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, and Danbury. The goal is to strengthen families, elevate working households, and ensure that every person is healthy, safe, and economically secure.

At the heart of that mission are ALICE^® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families, those who work hard yet struggle to make ends meet. They are the backbone of our communities: child care providers, restaurant staff, home health aides, retail workers, and small business owners.

Under Isabel’s leadership, one of United Way’s most transformative programs, Cora’s Kids, has expanded access to affordable, licensed child care across Greater Danbury and Greater New Milford. The program supports more than 150 home-based child care providers and 52 substitutes and assistants, delivering quality care to more than 1,000 children each year. Most of these providers are women from immigrant and Latino backgrounds who, through United Way’s training and support, have become successful small business owners.

“Cora’s Kids is an important economic driver in the community,” she said. “It not only empowers these child care entrepreneurs to build profitable businesses, but also strengthens their neighborhoods by ensuring that working families have access to safe, nurturing, and culturally responsive child care.”

Isabel’s approach goes beyond impact. It’s about listening — to parents, educators, and residents — and designing solutions with them, not just for them. From Stamford to New Milford, her team convenes diverse voices around one shared purpose: to help families thrive.

Her leadership has also brought a renewed focus on equity and representation. Isabel has consistently championed inclusion, transparency, and belonging, recognizing that real progress comes when communities see themselves reflected in the organizations that serve them.
